Technical information on the latest generation fuel system
The Landi LSI / Omegas is the latest generation of petrol to LPG conversion system on the market. The system is a sequential slave injection system which means that for each cylinder the correct amount of gas is injected by its corresponding injector. The system uses the petrol injector signal as an input to determinate the correct amount of fuel which the engine needs in that condition. The system works according the same cylinder principle, which means that the gas injection time is based on the petrol injection time of that very same cycle and cylinder.
The engine starts on petrol. When the engine runs and the gas mode is chosen with the fuel switch, the gas ECU will check the signals for switch over condition.
From the moment the minimum engine temperature for switch-over has been reached the solenoid valve on the tank and pressure regulator will open.
The liquified gas that arrives from the tank will be vaporized in the two stage pressure regulator leaving it at a pressure of 2 bar absolute pressure. The gas then passes through a filter on its way to the gas injector rail.
When the rest of the switch over conditions are obtained (minimum rpm, acceleration or deceleration), the system will switch over to gas. The petrol injectors at this moment will be cut off and the gas ECU will start to drive the gas-injectors.
The gas ECU reads each individual petrol injector signal and translates it into a gas-injector signal to drive each separate gas-injector for that very same cylinder. This injector will meter the correct amount of gas that will enter the engine running though a little hose that is connected between the injector and the intake manifold.
Both the gas- and petrol system can use the same petrol ECU (adaptive) correction values, due to a precise calibration of the translation from the petrol injection time to the gas injection time.
Apart from driving the gas injectors, the gas ECU also controls other functions to complete the system, such as the fuel level indication, switch-over from petrol to gas and vice versa.
For example when the car runs out of gas the system will automatically switch back to petrol and alert the driver with an acoustic signal.
When ignition is switched of or the engine stalls, the solenoid-valves will close and the system will return to the petrol mode, after 15 seconds the system will automatically go into sleep mode.
During the installation and maintenance it is possible to display the functioning of the system and check the diagnostics by connecting a PC with the gas ECU using the interface software and an interface unit.
